THE ROLE OF THE FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE (FAR)
All member institutions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) are required to
designate a Faculty Athletics Representative from its full-time faculty ranks. The Faculty
Athletics Representative (FAR) reports directly to the Chancellor and works closely with
the Director of Athletics to support a campus environment where athletics is maintained as
a vital component of the educational program and student-athletes constitute an integral
part of the student body.
Responsibilities assigned to the UC Davis FAR include:
- Principal advisor to the Chancellor on all matters related to intercollegiate athletics
- Institutional and voting representative to the NCAA and Big West Conference
- Represents UC Davis on the Big West Conference Council and Big West Compliance Committee
- Interprets NCAA and Big West legislation
- Monitors the coordination of compliance efforts and rules education among campus entitites outside of the athletics department
- Assists the director of athletics in devising and implementing NCAA rules education and compliance programs inside the athletics department
- Monitors the academic preparation and performance of student athletes on each sports team, and is involved in reporting this information to the Chancellor, the director of athletics, and the Athletics Administrative Advisory Committee (AAAC)
- Facilitates and supports the development of a student athlete advisory committee to ensure the involvement of student athletes in decisions which affect their lives.
- Assists the CEO and director of athletics in determining insititutional positions on proposed NCAA and conference legislation.
- Facilitates communication among various campus entities, in particular, between the athletics department and the faculty governance structure.
- Chairs the Athletics Administrative Advisory Committee (AAAC)
- Dotted-line supervisory role for the Assistant Athletic Director in Charge of Compliance
- Attends UC Davis Athletics Compliance Meetings and Coaches Meetings
- Administers annual coaches’ recruiting certification program
- Attends NCAA Annual Regional Rules Seminars
- Member of the UC Davis Title IX Athletics Advisory Committee, attends year-round meetings.
- Provides annual report to UC Davis Chancellor on AAAC and ICA issues, research, and progress
The FAR plays a lead role in decisions involving major infractions of NCAA and
conference rules. If a possible major infraction is identified, athletics administration notifies
the FAR who then initiates a process to fully investigate the issue and determine the
appropriate penalty. The FAR notifies the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and
Chancellor of the investigation, and in consultation with them, determines if a more involved
process is needed to investigate and resolve the issue . Ultimately, the FAR communicates to the
NCAA the details of the infraction, the investigative findings, and the campus’s self-assessed
penalty, and works with NCAA enforcement staff to complete final resolution of the issue.
